Released more than 20 years after his debut, Write Me Back balances all the sonic adventures the R&B veteran has taken while paying homage to his soul forebears. The grown-up party tune “Love Is” features peppy disco percussion and honeyed vocals, while the post-breakup anthem “All Rounds On Me” fuses gospel organ with swinging rockabilly guitar. It’s a retro-sounding record, for sure, but spliced with enough modern flair to stay fresh, as on the finger-snapping “Feelin’ Single.”
