If The Waves, The Wake sounds celestial, it’s for good reason: Toronto’s Juno-nominated, Polaris Prize-shortlisted indie-folk group recorded their seventh studio album in the historical Bishop Cronyn Memorial Church in London, Ontario. The setting, along with instruments ranging from woodwinds to marimba, adds to the album’s unique atmosphere and depth. (The band’s stated objective was to break from their routine and record the songs without any acoustic guitars.) Lead singer Tony Dekker’s soft words and vocal melodies cascade from the rafters on “In a Certain Light” and a melting a cappella “Visions of a Different World.” Yet despite the hushed room, the band makes joyful noise on “Alone but Not Alone” and invokes sepia-toned ’70s rock on “Side Effects,” taking advantage of the acoustically perfect environment.
