SOMETHING EDITORS’ NOTES

In the '70s, everyone released live albums. Many acts released double live albums, but Hall & Oates had yet to achieve that kind of success. (The 1980 album Voices would begin their ascent to that stratosphere.) In 1978, this seven-track live album would suffice. The hit “Rich Girl” results in a spirited performance, but one that also points out that the beauty of Hall & Oates was often best captured in the studio, where the subtleties of the arrangements could be better heard and savored. “Sara Smile” provides a platform for an extended vamp where the duo and their road band sound like they’ve given thought to becoming a hard rock answer to Van Morrison. “Do What You Want, Be What You Are” and “I’m Just a Kid (Don’t Make Me Feel Like a Man)” are the songs best suited for the live setting, in terms of giving the band what they want. The version here of “Abandoned Luncheonette” sounds like Hall & Oates themselves getting what they want.
