The “last time” in the title of George Strait’s first live album doesn’t mean that this is his final concert. Rather, it documents the last time the Astrodome hosted the long-running Houston Livestock Show, which had been a mecca for country music performers since Gene Autry first appeared there in 1942. That Strait was the last performer at such a hallowed event speaks to his stature in both Texas and the country music world at large. For the country music nation no one better symbolizes the essence of its music and its values. The concert runs through a selection of Strait’s innumerable hits, songs that even casual Strait fans can sing word-for-word, and the 50-year-old Strait, invigorated by the momentousness of the occasion, sings them like he was 20. Part of that vitality comes from his lifelong touring group, The Ace In the Hole Band.
