The brazenly kitschy sound of Electric Six veers in a techno-trash direction on Heartbeats and Brainwaves, an album crackling with overheated eroticism. The Detroit combo downplays its guitar crunch in favor of a pulsating synth-pop approach that recalls Soft Cell, Depeche Mode, and similar pioneers of the genre. Amid robotic beats and twitches, frontman Dick Valentine snarls out tales of extreme lust, occult intrigue, and bad meal choices with a leering swagger. The ominous trudge of “We Use the Same Products,” the chant-along thump of “Food Dog,” and the eerie atmospherics of “Psychic Visions” drench their keen wit in thick coatings of gleeful vulgarity. The Six dip into discozoid funk on “It Gets Hot,” deliver an ear-snagging chorus hook on “Hello! I See You!,” and reclaim their metal edge on “Gridlock!” As usual, they play things as straight as possible, no matter how outrageous the proceedings become. Taken on its own terms, Heartbeats and Brainwaves is the sort of hell-bent assault on good taste that the band’s fans have come to know and crave.
