SOMETHING EDITORS’ NOTES

The Burkina Faso-born Senegalese singer and guitarist Cheikh Lo first reached a wider audience with his 1996 debut, Ne La Thiass, which was produced by fellow countryman Youssou N’Dour. Lo is no purist: he draws from Senegalese mbalax, but also from several other African styles and Cuban music. 2011’s Jamm, his first release in a half-dozen years, is an appealing, mellow affair. Not sleepy mellow though; there’s an edge to Lo’s voice, and the percussion rattles in exciting ways. “Conia” finds Lo singing in Jula (a West African language) over drums, fluttering acoustic guitar, and Pee Wee Ellis’s tenor saxophone. On “Il N’est Jamais Trop Tard,” a song from the early ‘70s, rolling guitars and tumbling percussion are placed against smooth French vocals. “Seyni” is one of the album’s highlights. Its deep Afro-Cuban groove is marked by horn interjections, drum explosions, and Omar Puente’s violin. Lo is a member of the Mouride brotherhood, a Muslim Sufi sect, and on “Dieuf Dieul” he gives thanks to Allah. The gentle and spare “Folly Cagni” is the album’s pleasing sendoff.
