Comparisons to Echo & The Bunnymen and The Teardrop Explodes are inevitable, due to White Lies' cavernous reverb, heavily emphasized keyboards, and a somber longing that takes romantic troubles to the existential edge. Certainly, those who grew up immersing themselves in the early-'80s goth scene will find a sense of comfort in these familiar scenes. Yet anyone could enjoy the sublime melodies that hold these songs together. The mesmerizing first single, "There Goes Our Love Again," is too beautiful to lose, and "First Time Caller," which follows after an appropriate instrumental breather ("Space I"), furthers the reasons for taking this London trio seriously, no matter how carefully they've studied the early '80s. Songs such as "Mother Tongue," "Getting Even," and "Be Your Man" show an awareness of the pitfalls in this approach and deliberately seek to be as accessible as they are potentially dark. "Change" is where White Lies slow down for a ballad that seeks to drain every tearduct. The deluxe edition adds seven demos that display the group's talents with less reverb and more band interplay.
